How it works

MLD is a gentle hands-on manual therapeutic technique applied with light alternating pressure and with slow rhythmic movement. The direction of the push-pressure follows the direction of the efferent lymph vessels of the skin.

MLD causes an increase in lymph re-absorption, an increased fluid flow, and an acceleration of the filling and emptying of the lymph capillaries.

This reduces swelling, innervates the nervous system to reduce stress and increase well being, improves the immune system and reduces inflammatory pain.

Precautions we may take

  • Manual lymphatic drainage lowers blood pressure. To manage this we use shorter treatment times and smaller treatment areas initially for patients with existing low blood pressure problems.

  • Asthma patients must always have their inhaler with them but can be safely treated during an attack-free interval.

When not to use MLD

Manual lymphatic drainage may not be used in patients with certain disorders. These include:

  • Malignant diseases that have not been treated, excluding palliative treatment

  • Acute inflammation - i.e. swelling caused by foreign bodies such as virus, bacteria, fungi, chemicals etc.

  • Acute allergies such as those caused by pollen, or certain foods as MLD may aggravate the condition

  • Acute deep vein thrombosis

  • Cardiac insufficiency - we cannot treat swollen feet, ankles or calves caused by heart issues
